Eternal Father giving a blessing. Portugal, 16th century, plaster and pigments
The Alberto Sampaio Museum is the only Portuguese museum with a permanent exhibition room dedicated to “fresco” painting, created in 2002 with the aim of showing the outstanding paintings of some churches in Northern Portugal in the 1930s and 1940s.
In the mid-16th century, Portuguese temples began to be covered with murals – a quicker, more durable, effective, renewable and cheaper solution.
Having fallen into disuse in the following centuries, the mural paintings were “replaced” by the gilded woodcarving that covered them up. In the 1930s, the General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments uncovered several frescos. Some were detached from the architectural support and remained inside the buildings in autonomous panels or were transferred to museum collections, namely the Alberto Sampaio Museum.
